Google Introduces Publisher Opt-Out for AI Overviews Amid Regulatory Pressure
Google has unveiled a new control allowing publishers to block their content from appearing in AI Overviews, the generative AI feature in its search results. The tool, rolled out initially to UK publishers, lets sites exclude themselves from AI-generated responses without affecting traditional search rankings. The move comes as the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) tightens oversight of Google's dominance in search.
The opt-out mechanism grants publishers leverage in licensing negotiations with Google. Site owners can toggle off participation in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI Overviews in Discover. Content from opted-out sites won't train Google's AI models either. The company plans global expansion after UK testing.
Google is simultaneously adding AI response performance metrics to Search Console, showing impression counts by page and country. This follows the CMA's 2025 designation of Google as having 'strategic market status,' which empowered the regulator to mandate such publisher controls.
